PORSCHE Cayman S 987.1 Design Edition 1
Sadly, I need to sell my Cayman S DE1 as funds needed on other projects.
Stunning flat black (the only colour these were available in)
I had intended to keep this car long term, hence the expense I’ve invested in it over the past year.

I searched for a 987.1 with an engine re-build as virtually every standard 3.4 Flat 6 of this generation is going to suffer from the bore scoring problem at some point, as anyone reading this ad probably already knows. This common problem on this 987.1 has been addressed with a large invoice included in the service history pack.
I bought the car less than 5,000 miles after it had had a full engine build by Performance Porsche Klassiker (invoice included), after all six cylinders had been rebuilt with new cast iron liners and Mahle forged pistons installed.
I then got it serviced by Discount 9 Porsche specialists on 07.08.2024, which included oil, oil filter, new rear brake disks, rear brake pads and wear sensors – for a total cost of £954.65.
Since then, on 13.12.2024, I’ve had the whole suspension set-up rebuilt by Friends Green Porsche in Hitchen; every component brand new – wishbones, drop links and top mounts etc, plus Bilstein B16 damptronics which work with the PASM in dash that the Design Edition 1 came with as standard. The car has done about 2,000 miles since this nearly £8k job, which also included a full coolant system rebuild – front cross-over pipes, new steering rack and engine mounts. It drives incredibly after this major overhaul.
The full suspension re-fresh with the B16’s cost £7,842.99 with invoice to myself dated 13.12.24 as included in photos.
It’s incredible to drive and sounds amazing with the standard DE1 exhaust. Could be made louder if this was swapped out for a genuine switchable Porsche exhaust (as Friends Green and others will fit with factory-look button integrated into dash), There are other options available from Milltek etc if you felt necessary but to be honest it doesn’t really need it in my view, the standard DE1 exhaust note is perfect and chrome duel tailpipes differentiate from a standard Cayman S.
The Design Edition 1 was a final run-out model of the 987.1, the other being the Cayman S Sport which lacked a few features over a DE1. (but did get the Sports Exhaust)
For the DE1, Porsche added every available option to the cabin, with extended leather throughout – upper and lower dash, door panels, glovebox, plus Alcantara steering wheel, handbrake, gear shift gaiter and headlining (all of which are in amazing condition in this car. The alcantara has been refurbished and is not worn / greasy / weathered-looking as all the others I viewed were.It looks like new. The alcantara roof removes the problem of a sagging headlining as is common on a standard Cayman S.
I have the invoice for the engine build plus lots more service history, Design Edition 1 booklets / memorabilia etc.
Since ownership, I’ve also changed the AOS, cleaned out the intake manifold.A failing AOS is a standard maintenance issue on this generation Flat 6 3.4 engine (plus Carreras) but an easy job to sort out when they need changing every few years.
I replaced mine in about 2 hours, including a full detox of the manifold to avoid smoke on start-up, caused by the Porsche AOS being badly designed from factory, allowing some tiny amounts of oil into the manifold. The smallest drop can cause a plume of smoke for a couple of seconds on start-up but represents no actual problem with the overall running of the engine. The recently fitted AOS means there are none of these problems on this car.
This 987.1 doesn’t do that and has lost no oil despite many multiple trips a month travelling between South Wales and London over the past year.
Porsche state that an amount of oil top-up is required with their engines in the owner’s manual. I check mine every time before I start it and the guage in the dash never seems to drop.
I would confidently drive it to visit my son in Switzerland today with no concerns about its ability to do this faultlessly. The incredible handling on the new Bilstein B16 suspension and reliability of the rebuilt engine would make every mile of this journey a pleasure due to the incredible handling and performance.
It’s just been professionally machine polished – the paint is in great condition but please remember that this is a 2008 registered car and there are inevitably some age-related chips and small imperfections but you need to look hard to find. It looks like a car that has covered half the mileage.
It’s currently under a cover in a dry store on a trickle charger with a brand new battery and been SORN this week.
I know it’s only going to go up in value over the coming years and I will regret seeing it go but funds are needed elsewhere so the time has come for this DE1 to go to a new owner.
The only negatives are that the air-con could do with a re-gas and if keeping it, I would replace the central vinyl decal as there’s a small area which has weathered. I’m being totally picky here and you have to look hard to notice. Full set of decals are available in various colours if you feel the need to replace but really don’t think you would bother.
The wheels have been professionally refurbished and unmarked with matching, virtually brand-new, Pirelli P-Zeros all round. They sit on the 5mm spacers that the Design Edition 1 was specified with from factory.
A full alignment was carried out by Friends Green Porsche while they carried out the complete suspension overhaul and fitted the Bilstein B16 damptronics.
Eight former keepers, HPI clear with Car Vertical report supplied to prove there have been no previous accidents or hidden problems.
Covered 94k miles and it drives like it’s done 30k – or actually much better on the newly installed Bilstein Damptronics over the original set up.
A very regrettable sale of a fantastic example of a Cayman 987.1 Design Edition 1 – which I intended to keep long term, hence the investment I have put into it during my time of ownership.
A print-out of the full spec of the car from new is also included (With correct VIN noted) It has virtually every option a 987.1 Cayman S DE1 could come with, including a Bose sound system which is up there with the best audio I have ever heard in a car. Plus optional Bi-xenon headlights, heated leather seats, auto climate control – all options over a standard Design Edition 1.
A Sony head unit with Apple Car Play is connected to the Bose system with the original head unit also included.
This was a £70k+ car when new.
The private plate in the photographs has now been taken off the car and it’s now back on M800 URN
Recent MOT 09/03/2025 with no advisories.
Any inspection welcome and test drives with proven insurance in place.

Nationwide delivery can be arranged at buyer’s expense.
Genuine enquiries only please – no timewasters. I’m in no urgent rush to sell but would discuss sensible offers very near to the asking price.
Sale price reflects the expense invested in this incredible car. The engine build and suspension overhaul amounts to approx £20k alone.
